2009 WRA GOLD AWARD WINNER
RESIDENTIAL KITCHEN $40,000 to $80,000
This late 1970’s 2-story home was originally built as a spec home and purchased by the owner as newlyweds. As their family grew, they realized that while they loved their neighborhood, and many features of the home, the kitchen and “social” areas of the home no longer fit their needs. After exploring the idea of moving or building new, our clients decided upon remodeling this house to make it the home they wanted.
The overall project included a family room addition and a kitchen remodel. The family room addition, while adjacent to the kitchen, is not included in this award submission. The kitchen was fully gutted and redesigned to meet the needs of our clients. All new custom cabinetry, solid surface countertops, a large and functional island, new electrical fixtures, and beautiful flooring are featured throughout this project.
Our clients’ primary desire was to have a more functional kitchen that looked and felt spacious. They were looking for ample counter and storage space and specifically requested a large island. We entirely gutted the space, removing the peninsula and the soffits. This alone provided much more freedom with the design. With extended countertops, the new work area is larger and the new island provides additional space for seating and prep work.
The beautiful island is the focal point of the remodel. We achieved our goal of making this a distinctive feature by painting and distressing the cabinetry. The island top is Corian Pompeii Red single piece with no seams. Select grade birch cabinetry, stained with a hint of red to compliment the flooring and the island top, was chosen for the rest of the kitchen.
All custom cabinetry was specifically built to meet the needs of the client. Note the finished end panels on all the cabinets, plus the crown molding finishing at the upper cabinets. “Furniture style” trim on the island contributes to its distinctive look. At the owners’ request, we installed liquor storage and trash pull-outs.
The tall pantry cabinets were originally planned to be deeper with a pronounced reveal between the two separate sides. Upon demolition, we discovered that the framing of the second floor above was not adequately supported, and we needed to install a new bearing header in the space where our pantry was supposed to be. As a result, the pantry was constructed with less depth, and instead of a full cabinet, we have a face frame covering the drywalled areas inside. This maintained both the storage needs and the look desired by our clients.
The kitchen is everything our clients wanted; functional, bright, beautiful, and includes an island large enough for the family to gather around while the cook works. It is also a beautiful focal piece for the entire kitchen. The handcrafted details make it appear as a piece of furniture – not just another cabinet.
